Experimental Properties, Experimental Flesh: The Stage Property as Anatomical Instrument in John Ford’s ’Tis Pity She’s a Whore

This article examines Annabella’s heart in John Ford’s ’Tis Pity She’s a Whore as both a human organ and a stage property.

I argue that audiences negotiate these competing identities in what I call a theatrical experiment. This perceptual uncertainty unsettles anatomical knowledge as an expression of authority over the female body.

The article develops my wider research into stage properties, experimental science, and attempts to know the female interior in early modern tragedy.
